For young drivers and those who might need some reminding, we’ve compiled some tips for driving in the snow.

# 1 – Take your time. The key to doing that is to leave for your intended destination early. Nothing can make your winter commute more stressful and potentially dangerous than being in a rush.

# 2 – With slick roads comes increased stopping distance. The way to combat that is to increase the distance between you and other drivers. Under normal conditions, you should leave two seconds between you and the vehicle ahead of you (a calculation based on speed and distance). In snow, doubling or tripling that number is a good idea.

# 3 – Keep it slow and steady…most of the time. In general, driving slower in snow is going to increase your reaction time and compensate for an increased stopping distance. But occasionally when driving uphill on a curve, driving too slowly can cause your car to lose grip on the road.

# 4 – Consider putting winter tires on your vehicle. Winter tires are composed of rubber that is designed to stay softer in colder temperatures thus increasing gripping ability.

Making snow angels and snowmen and skiing and sledding are so much fun you’d think winter was all fun and games; that is, until you get behind the wheel. Follow our tips for driving in the snow to help you stay safe this winter.
