Tom Naquin Celebrates National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Are you one of the 660,000 American drivers who will admit to using an electronic device while driving?

Imagine driving for 4.6 seconds at 55 miles per hour – blindfolded.

Let’s put this into perspective – that would be the length of an entire football field.

Scary, huh?

Well, if you answered yes to the first question, you have – in a sense – done this.

Distracted driving has become an epidemic in the United States, causing one in every four traffic crashes.

There were 3,331 people killed and 387,000 people injured from distracted driving in 2011.

Although it is illegal in 39 states to text while driving, people still do it!

And, texting is not the only activity considered as distracted driving. Technically, it is defined as any act that takes attention away from driving. So, even talking on the phone, drinking, eating, talking to passengers, grooming and reading – whether that be maps or text messages.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has deemed April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Tom Naquin encourages drivers of Elkhart and the surrounding South Bend Indiana area to pledge to drive phone-free for the entire month of April.

And, we hope, beyond that.
