Tired of spending all your gas during rush hour traffic? Yea, we thought so. That’s why Chevrolet added another vehicle to its lineup of models equipped with stop/start technology. As of this summer, the 2015 Chevy Impala base model will come standard with the innovative feature.
In addition to reducing the CO2 emissions caused by an idling engine, this feature also increases fuel efficiency by almost five percent or 1 city mile per gallon.
The technology allows the vehicle’s 2.5-liter engine to turn off as the vehicle coasts to a stop, relying on a small electric battery in the trunk. When the driver prepares to accelerate, the gas engine restarts automatically.
“Stop/start system customer research indicates they want the engine to start up as quickly and smoothly as possible after a stop,” said Mark Meyers, Chevy’s Global Vehicle Performance manager.
As a result, a team of software engineers was recruited to ensure the technology works consistently and transitions smoothly. They even accounted for situations when drivers start to slow down but change course and decide to accelerate instead.
The Malibu is currently the only other model to offer the fuel-saving technology as standard.
We’ll have the 2015 Impala here at Tom Naquin Chevy later this summer. Please feel free to contact us with any questions about the start/stop technology or to schedule a test drive and see how it works first hand.
Chevy is hoping for big things with the 2015 Spark EV, and in light of those expectations, they’ve moved production of the anticipated EV as close to home as possible. The Spark EV’s all-electric battery system will now be built at GM’s Brownstown, Michigan, plant. The 2015 Spark EV’s battery will be an all-new battery system, actually, which will help lightweight the vehicle by almost one hundred pounds.
“Using our in-house engineering and manufacturing expertise enabled us to deliver a battery system that is more efficient and lighter than the 2014 Spark EV without sacrificing range,” said Larry Nitz, executive director of GM global transmission and electrification engineering. “Our successful working relationship with LG Chem has allowed us to deliver a new battery system for the Spark EV that helps us to better leverage our economies of scale.”
The 2015 Spark EV shows Chevrolet at its finest: actively innovating a popular, reliable product while still keeping it one of the best and most efficient EVs on the roads today. The Spark EV, thanks partly to its new battery system, takes another giant step forward for green car technology. Check back with us at Tom Naquin Chevrolet often for more updates on the 2015 Spark EV.
The full-size pickup market is one of the most competitive segments in the automotive industry. You have to stand above the crowd in order to get noticed. That is why the Chevrolet Silverado will be getting some great updates for the 2015 model year.
According to The Detroit News, the Silverado will get some visual enhancements along with new technology. One strong possibility is a new transmission that will likely offer more than the current six gears. This would help improve the Silverado’s fuel efficiency along with a possible start-stop system.
In speaking with The Detroit News, GM’s executive chief engineer, Jeff Luke, said, “You’ll see these kinds of technologies over the next few years, a whole array of neat, new technologies, some focused on fuel economy, some focused on capability.”
The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado is due out later this year, so we’ll be on the lookout for more specific details as they become available.
