How to Prepare your Car for Winter

Yes, we said it, the dreaded “w” word—winter. Winter will be here before you know it, and it is better to get ready now than to make changes after having problems. Cold temperatures and harsh weather can wreak havoc on a poorly-running car, which is why you need to prepare your car for winter. Here are a few tips from U.S. News & World Report Contributor Trent Hamm.

  • Check antifreeze levels. Antifreeze does just what it sounds like—it prevents your engine from freezing in the winter. Make sure it hasn’t gotten diluted and you have the right amount.
  • Make sure HVAC works. Of course, you want your heater in the winter, but your A/C plays an important role, too, in defrosting your windshield.
  • Pack an emergency kit. If you get stranded on the road, you will need some supplies to keep you safe and warm. Items like a blanket, high-energy snacks, water, a flashlight, road flares, and a spare charged cell phone can help get you out of trouble.
  • Check your tires. As the temperatures drop, the roads get slicker. Make sure your tires have enough tread depth to get you through it. Consider making the switch to winter tires.
